Each year the Decorative Arts Collection Museum sponsors a competition to search out the best in contemporary decorative painting. All entries to this competition must be painted on a surface that has a function separate from its decoration. Entries are juried in March of each year, and the judging takes place in May or June. The winner is awarded a purchase prize and the winning entry becomes a permanent part of the museum's collection.

This year's winning entry, painted by Miniko Mizuno of Gifu, Japan, is a tour de force in Trompe L'oeil Painting. The exquisite rendering of the seashells captivated the judges. The faux wood and masterfully painted metal straps complete the illusion. We are so pleased to have such a contemporary master work become a permanent part of the museum's collection
